Bathymetry is the study of the underwater depth of sea and ocean floors, lake floors, and river floors. It has been carried out for more than 3,000 years, with the first recorded evidence of measurements of water depth occurring in ancient Egypt. Bathymetric measurements are conducted with various methods, including depth sounding, sonar and lidar techniques, buoys, and satellite altimetry. However, despite modern computer-based research, the depth of the seabed of Earth remains less well measured in many locations than the topography of Mars. Bathymetry has various uses, including the production of bathymetric charts to guide vessels and identify underwater hazards, the study of marine life near the bottom of bodies of water, coastline analysis, and ocean dynamics, including predicting currents and tides. This video, created by the Scientific Visualization Studio at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, simulates the effect on a satellite world map of a gradual decrease in worldwide sea levels. As the sea level drops, more seabed is exposed in shades of brown, producing a bathymetric map of the world. Continental shelves appear mostly by a depth of 140 meters (460 ft), mid-ocean ridges by 3,000 meters (9,800 ft), and oceanic trenches at depths beyond 6,000 meters (20,000 ft). The video ends at a depth of 10,190 meters (33,430 ft) below sea level – the approximate depth of the Challenger Deep, the deepest known point of the seabed.Video credit: NASA / Goddard Space Flight Center / Horace Mitchell, and James O'Donoghue

Hello Amar, welcome to Wikipedia. Thanks for all your good work on mathematics and physics topics.

You've probably already seen them, but if not, you might find these links helpful in editing pages or creating new ones: How to edit a page, Tutorial, Naming conventions, Manual of Style. You should probably read our policies at some point too.

But don't feel you have to read every policy document before you do anything. Dive in, be bold in editing, and if you do anything wrong, someone will be quick to correct it and let you know (hopefully, politely!)

If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my talk page. I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian!

Again, welcome! -- ALargeElk | Talk 08:38, 11 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Paying it forward

[edit]

Hi Amar. Rather rudely, I've only just noticed your response on my talk page, 5 days late. Sorry about that.

You ask how you can "pay it forward". One option is to join the welcoming committee, to greet other new Wikipedians. You're not committing yourself to anything - just offering to look out for anyone new and say hello when you spot them (I always keep half an eye on Special:Recent changes for any logged-in users with a blank talk page). Or, just keep doing good editing and creating good articles - that's every bit as important as all the administrative and community tasks.-- ALargeElk | Talk 15:12, 16 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the correction. I don't know what I was thinking when I wrote arccos instead of cos. CSTAR 16:10, 8 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Rama and supposed 'POV'

[edit]

I don't know how you thought "completely different perspectives of the same figure, religion or philosophy can both find justification in the same divine personality" this was POV. I personally found it weird that the discussion of Hindutva was there at all, and how they used Rama as inspiration, so I removed it. Later on, it was replaced and people said I was being biased. So I added Gandhi's relationship to show the diametrically opposed nature of their perspective. It's true that the more militant view of a bow-toting Rama is quite different from Gandhi's passive resistant inspiration. Explain your removal and how you think this sentence is POV. Frankly, if that sentence is POV, those criteria demand the whole 'perspective' section be removed. --LordSuryaofShropshire 16:28, Jul 16, 2004 (UTC)

Help

[edit]

The article on the philosopher Stuart Hampshire says (towards the end) that he was married to the philosopher Nancy Cartwright. The name Nancy Cartwright has an internal link, but it takes you to the page on an American actress of the same name. Could you please do the disambiguation thing here? I don't know how to. Thanks. Varada

Image:Rumtek

[edit]

Hi! Please DO NOT upload new images over older unrelated one. You had uploaded Image:Rumtek.jpg over my image. This is against wikipedia rules. You would have to upload it under a new file name. I have reverted the image and the licencing. PS How was your trip to Sikkim? =Nichalp «Talk»= July 8, 2005 19:03 (UTC)

Are they all Lamas or just monks?

[edit]

In your Image:Lamas_Rumtek.jpg are they really all' Lamas, or are some just monks? Billlion 12:44, 29 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • I was under the impression that 'lama' meant a monk ... I might be mistaken of course. The people in the orange costumes in the image are monks, whatever they are. Amar 11:04, July 30, 2005 (UTC)

IITK Motto

[edit]

Hi Amar,
Adding the Infobox was a nice idea. But, I have doubts abt the motto Through doubt to obfuscation. If I remember corretly its probably tamso ma jyotirgamaya, though I am not sure. Kindly make the required changes. Gaurav1146 13:39, 1 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

    • Hi Gaurav, actually I'm quite sure the motto which is there is quite right. Amar 15:38, August 1, 2005 (UTC)

Kawabata

[edit]

Hi, I have added The Lake to Kawabata's works. I found that there is already an internal like to this title and it takes you to a British play. Could you plz do the disambiguation thingy here too? Regards Varada

Hi there, I noticed that you changed The Lake to The Lake (play) off this article, indicating in your edit summary that you were disambiguating. But The Lake isn't a disambig page; it's about the play. Or were you planning on making it into a disambig? Sorry if I left this too quickly! I just noticed this pop up on my watchlist. · Katefan0(scribble) 21:13, 19 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced BLPs

[edit]

Hello AmarChandra! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Patrick Petrella, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages British, Church and The Telegraph (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. A tag has been placed on Vasundhara Das, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion".
